If you are exploring this topic, I want to remind you of something fun. You live in a point in history where we have options that billions of people before us never had. For the first time in history people are unrestricted by some of the unfair limitations of biology or pure bad luck.
When it comes to the use of surrogacy, there are many roads that lead to Rome. I would say the most common path to lead to surrogacy use is the challenges faced by gay couples. It is most often male homosexual couples who wish to use a surrogate mother to assist them with becoming parents. This isn't to say there are not a sizable number of other reasons as well.
One would wish that the only thing to worry about should be of a medical nature. In the real world the biggest issues surrounding surrogacy are legal issues and problems. In many locations surrogacy is outright illegal and banned. In other locations it is semi-legal and only for certain types of surrogacy. In the end you will have to do more work on the legal research than the medical research.
The two primary methods of getting a surrogate are the formal path and the informal path. The informal path would be to simply ask a female friend to do you a favor and carry a child for you. This has both legal and logistical issues. If she's a friend she will be able to see the child often through the years and may grow to see it as her own.
This is why going the formal way of using an agency is so much more preferable. A formal agency will mediate between you and the surrogate. They will craft the legal papers, they will constantly consult and follow up with both sides. They will ensure that it is never seen as more than a business transaction. And they take on all the legal responsibilities if anything goes wrong. It makes much more sense to go the formal route.
