Surrogacy And Real Life

by Kevin Williams

This is one subject that the media tries to make more interesting, whereas real life is a lot less romantic. In TV shows and movies you will have a gay couple who asks a female friend to get impregnated by one of the gay men. She is then to give up the child and give it to the gay couple to keep. All of this is done presumably altruistically and out of friendly kindness. In the real world this does exist, but it is extremely rare. In real life most surrogacy as commercial and purely a business transaction.

There are quite a lot of problems with this arrangement. If you get a gay couple that allows their female friend to get impregnated by them, and then carry the child, there's a lot of potential for future drama. What if she gets emotionally attached to the child she gave birth to? What if she changes her mind and decides she is the actual mother and parent and tells you to buzz off or just pay her child support?

This is why in the real world altruistic surrogacy so often ends up with all around drama and problems. It breaks up great friendships and gets formerly great friends suing one another. And it's not entirely that the mother could have foreseen either. The friendly surrogate often gets an emotional rush of attachment and bond to the child she couldn't have foreseen when she said yes to carrying your child.

Anyone with even two brain-cells to rub together will realize it is only logical to go with a specialized agency and let them take on all the headaches involved with this process. They will find the surrogate, their team of lawyers will craft the contracts and make sure all goes as it should. Their counselors will counsel both you and the surrogate, their connections to the best doctors will make sure it all flows smoothly. All around, they make things work and guarantee successful outcomes.

Commercial surrogates tend to be very well paid, usually tens of thousands of dollars. It might seem like a lot, but it is much cheaper than the potential legal costs involved with so called "free surrogacy" that comes from a friend.

Again though, let me remind you that when you go with commercial surrogacy and use an agency to intermediate, you remove all risks and problems and make sure things flow a lot more smoothly.

The topic of Surrogacy is not an easy topic. It would be great if I could give you easy answers to your issues, but there are not. And you can always go look at a good professional site about egg donation to understand things better.
