Comparing Traditional And Gestational Surrogacy

by Kevin Williams

When it comes to having a surrogate, you can have one of two types. You can have the traditional surrogate mother that most people are aware of. And then you have the newer type brought to us by medical breakthroughs, the gestational surrogate. Each of these surrogates bring with it some problems. The traditional brings legal problems, and the gestational is more medically challenging.

In short, a gestational surrogate is someone who only carries an implanted embryo. They are not in any way; shape or form biologically or genetically related to the baby they give birth to. In a traditional surrogacy, the surrogate mother is the child's real mother.

I think the problems which are possible in a traditional surrogate are more obvious. This is especially true if the surrogate has been acquired in an informal way, such as asking a female friend to be your surrogate mother. In this case she will be able to see the child for many years after she gives birth to it. And she is its biological and genetic mother, how can she have absolutely no feelings for it? This is why so often these kinds of situations can end badly. The surrogate may change her mind and claim she is its mother and demand child support from the person who hired her.

The gestational surrogate offers are more cut and dry situation. This is someone who can easily see herself as nothing more than a birth-giver because the child is not hers genetically. It's just some laboratory embryo that was implanted inside her, and all she did was grow and birth it. These usually go through a special agency which is good at coaching these women on how to handle it professionally. Sometimes you don't even have to ever meet the surrogate personally.

I recommend going through a professional agency. They will find the surrogate, they will coach both you and her. They will craft the legal agreements, study up on the law, craft up the contracts and take all legal responsibility. They also make sure that each side understands it's responsibilities and its liabilities. They also act as an escrow to assure all goes well.

I've always been fascinated by topics like Surrogacy. So if you need to read more on these subjects, I suggest you see this Surrogacy site and give it a read.
