An Introduction To The Art Of Woodworking

by Christy Hoyle

A craft that can be traced back as far as the Neanderthals, woodworking is a primitive craft. It continued to travel through history and has roots in the Neolithic period and into the advanced civilizations of Egypt and China. Although the modern craft of woodworking has evolved, the basic goal of the craft has not changed. Woodworking shapes a rough piece of wood into a finished product. This may be strictly utilitarian such as a mixing bowl or a chair, or a work of art such as sculpture or jewelry.

There are three wide categories of wood: Hardwood, softwood, and synthetic or man-made wood. Each has their uses. The project you are doing, your skill level and your personal taste, are things to consider when getting the wood. Cutting, sanding, and nailing planks together are not the only things involved in woodworking. Carving, turning, and burning are some of the major categories of woodworking.

Carving

Wood carving is the craft of removing pieces of wood from the blank to create a finished product. A kitchen bowl, or legs of a chair may be a product of this. Art can also be a purpose of carving wood. Both hand and power tools are used by wood carvers. The various methods of carving include chip carving, relief carving, treen, and whittling.

Chip carving is typically done on two planes to create intricate geometric patterns in the wood. The carver creates a raised picture off of the flat wood surface in a relief. To further enhance the image, the relief can later be painted or stained. Producing useful household items from wood is a type of folk art called treen. To name few - wood boxes, tea caddies and furniture. The art of trimming away wood with a knife to carve a pattern is called whittling.

Turning Wood

The crafter removes, or trims away thin slivers from a blank on a lathe when he's woodturning. By adjusting the lathe and the wood, they can create many unique and beautiful patterns.

The items that are created by turning wood are usually round or cylindrical in shape and can include bowls, pens, and furniture legs.

Burning

Images of bonfires at a summer camp usually pops up in our minds when we think of burning wood. Pyrography is the art of wood burning or a branding process. The purpose of burning wood is to create decorative patterns in the surface of the wood. Beautifully intricate patterns in a variety of tones and textures are created by skillful wood burners. Burning is not done with an open flame even if it is called wood burning. After burning the surface, to bring out its beautiful luster, some artists opt to paint or stain the wood.
