How To Learn Piano The Fastest

by Adrian Jones

Many people don't want to 'learn' to play the piano or 'practice' the piano, they just like to 'play' piano. 'Play' actually sounds like fun, 'practice' actually sounds like a chore. We get this picture from childhood - some kid stuck indoors 'practicing' scales while all of the other children are outside the window 'playing'.

So, the first thing we should instead do should be to see our piano practice from a new light. Visualize it as an easy way of speeding the learning process so that SOON you'll be able to 'play' piano and play well. In case you don't practice and you simply play old familiar tunes you move rather slowly. Yes, you'll get good at playing those old familiar tunes but technically you won't be pushing yourself to greater heights.

Proper, structured piano training lets you stride forwards. I say 'proper' since a large amount of individuals have an idea that practice IS just playing songs all the time. Practice needs to involve unchartered territory. The golden rule is - 'practice what you CAN'T play, not what you are able TO play'.

First of all, work out what you want to achieve. Do you simply want to know the necessary chords without considering how they are formed - then figure out a practice routine that leads to that particular goal. You may want to learn about inversions or chord substitution - again, make practice fit the aim.

Split your piano practice time into 2 halves. In the first 1 / 2 play the difficult stuff - your mind is sharper to begin with - then celebrate your success with some enjoyable but reasonably challenging tunes. Make sure to be at ease. Many a bad back has happened because of a bad piano stool at the wrong height. Make sure your piano is in tune. If you don't have a good piano but are serious about learning, GO BUY A GOOD ONE.

Every 15 minutes stretch your shoulders, arms and fingers, roll your neck to combat stiffness. Consider some Yoga exercises for shoulders and back.

Follow the Three times daily rule. Repetition in practice is ESSENTIAL. If you come across something especially hard you should practice it not less than 3 times every day. Don't get worried when it takes several weeks to master - you'll do it.

Don't play for the neighbors. Practice playing at a time when you won't care who will be listening so as to make lot's of errors and keep playing over and over. Organise your piano songs properly - don't leave it in a pile where you keep playing the ones on the top. When you download written music keep it inside a folder. Have plenty of shelves near to the piano. Be realistic - I honestly think that anybody can learn piano and learn it to an enjoyable level but no 2 people are alike - some are certainly more 'naturally' gifted than the others. If you have an average ability then it's all up to practice. The more you practice the more you learn.

From time to time, practice with your eyes shut - or don't glance at the keys - this truly hones your skills. Organise yourself to ensure that practice is achievable (this where Mindfulness comes in). Too many people think they don't have time to practice when really they just haven't found time. Just how long should you practice - that's up to what you want to achieve. You don't have to be a concert pianist. Although you may just play for yourself, just enjoy that. The archer who's thoughts are on the prize can't stay focussed on the target. Accept the bad days when it seems like you can't play a note. At times it's advisable to walk away. So keep in mind that 'playing' piano and 'practicing' piano are not the same. Which do you do? Aim for a bit of both.
