Why Fountain Pens Still Have Loyal Users

by Cindy Smith

In the age of computers, iPads, and mobile phones that allow people to type in their thoughts anywhere they are, why are there still individuals who fish out a pen and paper? Why, in particular instances, do some people even use fancy-looking pens, the so-called fountain pens? And in the few instances that we do need to scribble, like affix our signature, why can't a simple ballpoint pen that costs one dollar suffice?

Clearly for some people, the fountain pen is more than just a tool for affixing signatures, but it's something others, including the youth, cannot relate with. It's true also that most fountain pen users are older individuals, but you need to note as well that lots of them actually have their own computers and phones too, so why do they even bother writing longhand at all?

One could deduce quite a few answers for this, but one of them is plain habit. The use of phones and tablets for widespread "writing" did not come until a couple of years ago, so prior to this, everybody used pens on everything, including note-taking. Writers kept notebooks and pens with them because they are the only ways then, and those who still do today are not exactly technophobic, but simply doing what they were used to..

On the other hand, there are those who use fountain pens due to the sheer beauty of the piece and the simple act of writing with them. The likes of the namiki pen are delicately crafted pieces that are actually collectors' items. They are handcrafted by artists and no two pieces are the same down to the tiniest detail, not even two Dunhill Namiki pens.

Back then, sharing inks and trading nibs of fountain pens were considered a great way to interact with others. Nowadays, because fountain pen use is regarded as a special hobby, it's also seen as a great conversation starter. Let's not forget too that the mere act of writing is very therapeutic. There are no emails, chat messages, and window tabs to distract the writer from scribbling down his thoughts. For these patrons, the sheer gliding of ink on paper, and the output they come up with, are works of art by themselves.
