Doomsday Preppers: How to Survive like Ed Peden

by Terrance Franklin

Ed Peden is living evidence that political stances do not have to hold you back in regards to prepping. Regardless of being a self-proclaimed hippie right from the golden years of the 1960s, Ed doesn't mind packing heat in order to defend his renovated missile silo (the second we have seen on Doomsday Preppers).

1. Ed's Silo Home

Similar to Larry Hall before him, Ed Peden with his lovely wife are residing in a converted ICBM silo from the Cold War. There have been more than a thousand of these bases active at numerous occasions during the war and although several have been purchased and renovated there are surely others on the market. Ed managed to obtain his for a paltry $40,000 during the 1980s. This would be equal to around $100,000 in today's dollars.

For the richer preppers among us, the price to value on an installation like this is difficult to get over. There are also real estate companies aimed particularly at repairing bases similar to this. With built-in security, hardened external structures and storage space that is hard to beat, missile silos are sufficient to make you want to buy a lotto ticket.

2. How the Hungry will move

While he feels that numerous people will be coming to the bread basket in case there is a societal downfall, this may not be the outcome. The large amount of farmland as well as crops to reap could be far too much for anybody in the area to eat. In case that the system for transportation were to stop working for some reason, a great deal of food would possibly decompose in fields or perhaps in stockpiles.

The amount of food items produced in Central America is far too much for the regional population to consume. For individuals who would try to get in on the bonanza, the time might need to be focused on the harvest season.

3. Planning 'practical decisions' with others

There is an excellent scene in this show when a visiting family questions Ed if they could come to the silo if in the case of an emergency. He replies that he'll think it over, if they carry a lot of food items. Even though he may be a hippie on the outside, Ed is cold regarding who he allows into his survival plans.

Cabin fever is the most obvious in a bunker that is practically underground. When the blast doors close, Ed has to be comfortable with the people who he shelters within. His selection of friends may look non-traditional to strangers: a natural healer, a spiritual guide, a horticulturist. This is a long way away from the typically appreciated post-collapse professions such as soldiers, technicians and physicians.

The crucial element for survival in such close quarters is the social discussion that may be fostered. The people Ed had chosen are obviously very long term close friends. With the possibility of actually residing underground for a long period of time, it might be easier to have your companion with an alternate medical background rather than a stranger with an MD. On the whole, Ed seems to have put together a skill set which addresses the main demands of health, sustenance and also security in his very own way.
