The Evolution of Handbags

by Raymand Frank

Handbags have always been synonymous with femininity, female fashion and accessories. Handbags for men are it seems, here to stay and coined the 'man bag', yet they are not new to the male of the spices. Hand bags where originally used by men hundreds of years ago; these where different to those of today, but had similar purposes, to carry valuables and bulkier items.

History shows us that hand bags have been around for ever, with depictions on ancient Egyptian walls, but exactly when they were first used, nobody knows. The 1400's brought many changes and both men and woman wore handbags for practical and stylish reasons. They soon became a fashion item with embellishments like, fancy decorative embroidery, gold and jewels set in designs and motifs.

Towards the middle of the renaissance, hand bags were used by most people, and became larger, and made from cloth or hide and worn by travellers. As a fashion item they faded out as woman used smaller bags that could be hidden underneath the clothes. Men also stopped using handbags with the introduction of breeches with pockets.

By 1800, Europe, going through change after the French Revolution, also saw a dramatic change in women's fashion, and clothes became more delicate and worn tighter with blouses. This called for the use of handbags once again. At this time a handbag was called a reticule.

The handbag once again was used and became a fashion item, and women had a different bag for every occasion, and there also became a fashion-etiquette for carrying different types of bags. One particular way, was to have a long chain attached to the bag and carry it off the shoulder. The name handbag referred to men's hand language, and by the 1900's with compartments added, and fancy metal latches and locks. Fashion had pushed this as women were wearing the restrictive 'hobble skirt' so had no room to carry things about their person.

By the roaring twenties and in keeping with the "Crazy Years" fashion took a dramatic swing with clothes becoming a social statement and less rigid.Handbag design were effect by the Second World War, in the 1940s, materials used in the production of handbags, like zips and leather, were needed to help the war effort, so alternative materials were used, for example wood, plastic and other synthetics.

Nowadays handbags come in all shapes and sizes, and prices range from a few pounds to thousands. Celebrities endorse designer labels, setting trends and influencing consumers, and designers are forever looking for new ways to be creative and original. This includes finding new materials from waterproof coatings, plastics and the more traditional silk, velvet and leather, which remains one of the most popular.

Man bags are now a part of the contemporary man's wardrobe, with tote, holdalls, messenger, brief and camera bags, being trendy and stylish. Men as parents can also show off their fashion savvy with baby-changing bags, hanging from the new-born's pushchair.
