Photography Lighting Techniques For Today's Photographers
by Bernard Morris
Nowadays, you can typically see a lot of people taking photos using their digital cameras. Advancements in digital photography have allowed many newbie and pro photographers to explore other ways to capture memorable photographic images. But more than using a technologically-advanced camera, you need to improve your ability to manipulate light when taking photographs. Light, after all, is a very important element in photography.
To create dramatic effects, photographers usually prefer conducting photo shoots during the morning and before the dusk. However, for indoor, underwater or nighttime photo shoots, you can use artificial lighting to produce dramatic effects. You can also use different kinds of lighting equipment to achieve the effect you desire.
Video Light For More Dramatic Images
Weddings are one of the greatest occasions in which photography can be of much use. To produce images with a romantic feel for the bridal couple, a video light can be used. While flash gives a strong, unflattering light effect, video lighting is excellent for studio portraits. A video light can brighten up a dim location for photo shoots as well as huge studios, as it provides a wide range of illumination.
Underwater photography needs proper lighting, too, especially when you're taking pictures some metres below the sea surface. Using a handheld underwater video light, you do not have to worry about illuminating the surroundings to capture interesting colours of various species of fishes, corals and crustaceans.
Using Video Light As A Photography Technique
One good thing about video lights is that their brightness can be adjusted depending on what the situation requires. You can put a gel in front of an LED video light to produce a warm or tungsten effect. You may also adjust the diffuser to create soft effects on your photos. Additionally, video lights can be used together with other lighting equipment such as speed lights and flashguns in employing some photography techniques.
To explore other effects it can give, you can try placing the equipment in different locations during the photo shoot. For example, if you want flare in the photo you can place the light beneath the subject and move to a position where the edge of the light slightly appears in your camera.
