Where Did Hookah Bars Come From?

by Hookah Joe

Originally popularized the in the U.S. in the 1960's and 70's, hookah smoking is becoming significantly popular ever since the turn of the century. To explain it simply a hookah bar is the same as cocktail bar, but in a hookah bar you will get hookah in place of cocktails. There are a lot of Hookah bars in towns in the U.S.

The History of Hookah and Hookah Bars

Hookahs and hookah bars originated in India over five centuries ago in a far more primitive form close to the Pakistan border. Soon after becoming popular in India, hookahs made their way to turkey where the Turkish elite became very fond of smoking hookahs. Thereon it was brought to many other countries in the middle east including Lebanon, Syria and Egypt. As the origin of Hookahs is in the middle east, hookah bars are heavily associated with the same region. These businesses became places where patrons would socialize, have coffee, and discuss national politics and local events over a soothing hookah session.

Characteristics of Hookah Bars

Bars that are built to imitate the place of origin of hookah have generally Arab people running them. The furnishings are in line with the Middle Eastern culture of Indian culture. At some bars, there is nothing served except hookah. But some multifunctional bars serve snack foods, coffee and soft drinks too. Most of the smaller lounges don't have a liquor license and they do not offer liquor. The larger bars, however, possess a liquor license and they serve a number of cocktails in addition to wine and beer. Smaller hookah bars normally have music systems, but the larger bars have belly dancers, live DJs and the setting seems to be more like a night club.

Some hookah bars are purposely built near university and college campuses to attract the students. The trend has become common as a safer alternative to other sorts of smoking. Hookah bars do well near colleges as college life is a time to try out new things and enjoy the independence of life. The cities which are well-known for having several secondary education institutions in the U.S. have seen a great increase in the popularity of hookah bars.

The Mysterious Hookah

Now that you know what a hookah bar is, you may be asking yourself about the device that has been able to spread throughout the world and spark a smoking revolution. A Persian physician, Abul-Fath-Gilani invented the hookah in 1588. He was in India at that time. When it was invented, it was given the name of "huqqa". The word hookah comes from the very same Indian word "huqqa".

Whilst the primitive hookah looked considerably different, probably made out of coconut shells, the result has always been the same: purify and cool the smoke by moving it through water before breathing in. Here are the main components of a hookah:

1. Bowl - the tobacco is placed here.

2. Body - tobacco smoke reaches the water basin after moving through the body.

3. Water Basin - contains the water to purify and cool the smoke. Once purified, the smoke is held in a chamber over the water until it is inhaled by the smoker.

4. Hose - after the purified smoke reaches the chamber, the smoker inhales deeply through the hose connected into the water basin. The hose can be up to many meters long.

Thick, cool and fragrant smoke comes out of the hookah.

Words of a customer in a hookah bar:

"What you put in the hookah is not important, but who is along with you while you are smoking. It's a complete experience. You can find, good, old, intriguing and all kinds of people in a bar like this. As long as there is a desire for company and companionship, as long as people want to stop and think, there will be hookah bars."

More and more people are becoming part of the hookah trend and with the increasing number of hookah bars, it is very easy to get a taste of this culture.
