Dreaming Up A Flight Of Fancy With Steampunk Clothes
by Paul Budde
If you liked playing dress-up as a kid, you will know what fun it is to throw together all kinds of clothing and accessories to create a unique look. Of course you can still do this as an adult, but you run the risk of looking a little like a clown. Lovers of steampunk clothes have found a way to play dress-up for grown-ups while looking elegant and stylish too.
Steampunk is a genre of literature that mixes a Victorian or, to a lesser extent, Edwardian setting with science fiction. It describes a world where there is much technological advancement, but using steam power instead of electricity or fuel engines. Think of the books of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne or and you have a good idea of what the genre is about.
The literature has inspired design, art and fashion. Movies like '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea', based on Verne's book, as well as 'Hugo', 'The Golden Compass' or 'Wild Wild West' are great sources of inspiration for anybody who wants to dress in steampunk clothing. The idea is to take a Victorian aesthetic, add a modern twist and let your imagination run wild.
Essential in the steampunk wardrobe are items like Victorian-era bustles and corsets for women and vests, top hats and coats for men. Accessories include goggles and eyeglasses, canes, pocket watches and parasols. To find these, you can look at flea markets or shops that sell antique or vintage clothing. You can also order items online or create your own pieces.
Victorian attire is beautiful and stylish. However, a full Victorian outfit is also very uncomfortable. Victorian women often fainted because of their tightly laced corsets and the heavy fabric of their dresses, while men had to brave the stifling heat in their coats and top hats.
There is a way to get around the discomfort of Victorian clothes. You don't have to be historically authentic, so you can combine and adapt elements to suit your lifestyle. Instead of wearing a corset under a heavy gown, for instance, you can simply wear it with a petticoat, Victorian-style boots and maybe a little hat embellished with feathers.
Menswear don't have to be restricted to top hats and three-piece suits with coats either. After all, this is not how men in Victorian times dressed all day. Riding boots and jodhpurs are a great alternative, as is a vest over a shirt and suspenders.
One of the main features of the genre is technology. This is essential for getting through daily modern life too, so you can simply adapt your technological must-haves to look old, as if they could have belonged in Victorian times. For example, a cellphone or laptop with an outer casing made of copper or in a brass color would not be out of place at all.
The great thing about steampunk clothes is that you don't have to stick to prescriptive rules. Even though your main inspiration should be Victorian, you don't need to stay historically true to the era. You are, after all, creating the outfit for your own fantasy world.
