Problems You Might Be Having With Your Pond
by Roland Stockwell
While a large yard with a pond or lake can be beautiful, it is not particularly attractive if the pond water is green, slimy and murky. Owning this type of water feature does require some maintenance, so if you have a pond, consider the following maintenance tips which are both effective and natural.
A certain amount of algae or other aquatic plants is not harmful for ponds. This vegetation can protect your shoreline from the effects of erosion and is beneficial to any fish that live in the pond or lake. However, when algae do begin to grow out of control, you will need to act quickly to restore a proper balance in your water. It is always best to use a safe, natural approach to pond control.
One product that can attack an overgrowth of either filamentous or planktonic algae is Captain. This natural product uses a mix of copper to keep algae at bay, rather than resorting to a mix of harmful chemicals. After treatment, algae problems should begin to subside within a week of use. The product is safe for any pond animals, such as fish or birds, as well as for humans, pets or livestock.
Once you have restored a proper balance to the pond, it is fairly easy to keep the water maintained each month. The AquaSpherePRO, for example, is an excellent product that can keep water fresh from month to month. These spheres contain a mix of helpful bacteria that prevents water problems before they occur.
The spheres are completely biodegradable and last for up to 30 days, so each month, you simply throw in the appropriate amount of spheres. You will need to calculate the approximate volume of your water feature in order to determine how many spheres to use each month. This veterinarian-approved sphere will not harm wildlife, pets or humans as it contains no harmful chemicals.
There are also products such as SePRO Natural Reflection and SePRO Blue which work to restore the reflective quality and color or your lake. Both of these products use a propriety blend of environmentally friendly dyes to improve the look of your water. This product is simple to use; you simply place the packet gently into your water and dyes will begin to spread throughout the water. You can intensify the effect by adding extra packets.
