How To Make Baby Blankets

by Clifford Gill

Baby blankets are easy to make at home. Instead of buying them outside and paying more, you can create your own baby blankets for your own personal use or as a gift for baby showers.

How To Sew A Baby Blanket

It is very simple to make a blanket from fleece or flannel fabric - just cut and hem! A good size for a baby is one yard of fabric with a width of 40 - 50 inches.

Make it special and personal by embroidering a design or the baby's name. If you do not have embroidery skills, buy a cute embroidered patch to iron or sew onto the blanket.

You can give the baby more warmth by using a cotton batting to fill in the gap between both layers of the blanket, regardless of the material used for each layer.

How To Crochet A Baby Blanket

Let us assume you are familiar with the basics of crochet - you can start creating the blanket with a chain equal to the blanket's width, then move on to double crochet stitching. It's your call whether you want to do this with just one color, or if you wish to form multi colored stripes in one way or another. After finishing the full sized blanket, then you can work around the edges, making three chains in each of the four corners for a clean-looking trim.

One alternative would be to crochet about three to five rows of different colors. To create the look of a checkerboard, use pastel colors for a contrasting effect.

You can also think outside the box and follow a specific pattern for an amusingly different design. Check before you start that you understand all the stitches that are used in the pattern. There is usually one stitch that serves as an "X-factor", ensuring the success of the pattern, so you have to make sure you know how to sew this before anything else.

A hand knitted baby blanket is another option aside from the aforementioned crochet. Use the plain knitting stitch (not knit and purl) or for a more solid blanket, moss stitch (one knit one purl, doing a plain stitch where there was a purl in the previous row and vice versa). Again you can either knit the whole blanket at once in one color or stripes, or you can knit squares and then sew them together later.

The latter method can allow you to "update" the blanket, adding more squares on as the baby grows, saving you the trouble of buying a completely new blanket.

It is important to choose your yarn carefully. It has to be something conducive to a baby's skin. For a baby with very sensitive skin you may want to use 100% cotton instead of wool or synthetics which can make a baby itchy.

Made with love, beautiful baby blankets can be something that parents and baby will treasure all their lives.
