Cleaning Water Fountains

by George Harris

Taking care of your water fountains don't really take much time because you only need a few hours every month to keep it looking good and running for years. Clean the bowl and pump now and again and everything should run smoothly. Most fountains need to be cleaned every one to three months to prevent the build up of algae and mineral deposits. You have to pay attention in cleaning the bowl, rock, and the pump of the fountain and this means taking the pump apart and clean the inside because algae build up can clog the pump. Dish detergent, old toothbrush, and warm water are the best tools in cleaning the fountain.

Because various fountain manufacturers use different materials to make their water fountains, some include specific cleaning instructions relevant to their products. When you follow such instructions closely then you'll enjoy the water fountain for a long time. Do not use any products on the fountain that are not recommended in the instructions that come with your fountain or you may void the warranty. Products are available at hardware stores, garden stores and pet stores that will reduce the growth of algae in the fountain and/or break up mineralization to finer particles that do not stick as readily to the water fountain. Never use bleach as it can damage the pump and the water fountain itself.

Using distilled water instead of the tap water is one of the most effective ways in keeping the water fountain clean. This will help keep mineral deposits from building up on its surface or in its tubes and pump. With large water fountains, regular use of a non-toxic water clarifier may be a more practical choice than distilled water. Constantly moving water helps keep mosquitoes away from an outdoor or solar water fountain as well.

When checking your fountain you want to make sure the water level is where is should be. It is important that your water is at the right level because the pump needs to be submerged underwater. The water in the indoor water fountain or indoor water wall acts as a cooling agent to the pump. If the pump is out of the water, it will start to run dry and eventually burn out causing you to buy a new pump. Keeping eye on the water level will help you save some cash. Likewise changing the water every month helps eliminate the development of algae.

Water fountains are easier to clean and maintain than to encounter major repair caused by neglect. Fortunately, a well-planned and well-tended water feature requires minimal time and effort. The secret is keeping the ecosystem in balance. A good rule of thumb: Average-sized water features that are ecologically balanced typically require about one hour per week for cleaning garden fountains.
