Water Fountains: Indoor and Outdoor

by George Harris

There are various designs of water fountains that can be used both indoors and outdoors. Whether you want a simple tabletop fountain to grace an entryway or a large wall fountain mounted in your living room, there are a number of options for you to consider. Aside from wall and tabletop fountains you can also opt for floor fountains that are freestanding units normally bigger and more substantial compared to tabletop models.

Waterfall fountains bring the calming effect of cascading water to any room. Most indoor fountains come preassembled and are often used as accent pieces, though some are clearly intended to be the primary design element in a room. Indoor fountains not only provide beauty, they also serve to humidify the air.

Fountains release negative ions which have been shown to improve mood and increase energy. The splash of water from water fountains produce the negative ions and have several good effects in the physiological system and physical development of the human bodies. It stimulates balance in the serotonin level of the brain. It relieves tension, stress, depression, and other emotional disorder. Also it makes the weak body stronger, rejuvenated, and comfortable as it performs and mind set is in good condition when it process its duties. It aids the body to keep good physical condition and lessen the unhealthy molecules or elements in the body. Negative ions can also neutralize unhealthy particles present in the air so there will be lower rates of getting them. Even the environment can get its share of the health benefits as produced by higher negative ions.

Water fountains are also popular with Feng Shui specialists. If you wish to follow the feng shui tradition there are couple of things you need to avoid. Do not put your fountain on the southern side of your home, as this is associated with your fame, which is related to fire - and you don't want to put the fire of your fame out with water! Also do not put a water fountain in the bedroom, as this can create uneasiness and worry.

The benefits of water fountains will only be attained if the water fountains are properly maintained. Make sure you add water to the water fountain regularly so the pump will not suck up air and burn out. Use distilled water if you can and if not add a drop or two of bleach to the water every week or so, the bleach will not damage or discolor the stone. Clean the stone and metal fixtures monthly. Use a brush on the stone and for the metal just water. If the water does not flow evenly over the fountain turn it off and take a green scratch pad to the edge of the copper where the water spills out. It will help the water to evenly flow over the water fountain.
