Discover the Benefits of Racehorse Ownership

by Ruth Williams

Buying a racehorse is very exciting. Previously, only the rich and privileged could afford to own a racehorse. By owning a racehorse you can enjoy the rich tradition of horse racing. The benefits for the owner are numerous. The thrill of raising and owning a horse alone is a great benefit by itself. Many have always dreamed of owning a horse. Involvement in this side of racing brings great satisfaction. Nothing can beat the excitement of a day at the races to see your own horse race. There aren't many sports that can compete with this is the same way.

Nowadays buying a racehorse is made much easier through the various ownership options which are available. You can choose between being sole owner of a racehorse or part owner through a racehorse syndicates. Owning a share of a racehorse is far more affordable than sole ownership which means more people can enjoy the benefits which come with racehorse ownership.

Apart from the pleasure of actually having your own racehorse there are other benefits which you could experience. One is the huge amount of cash prize the winning horse stands to receive. Some competitions award prize money to the first six. Others would reward the top three only. Total prize winnings in 2008 was estimated to be 106 million. Owners also receive trophies if their horses win.

The second advantage is the race day perks. Race day perks include access to exclusive areas and facilities.

It is not unusual to receive appearance money. It is not unusual for you to be paid appearance money to encourage you to run your horse in certain races or on certain racedays. Appearance money totalled approximately 1.5 million in 2008.

By owning a racehorse you become eligible to reclaim VAT paid out on the horses upkeep which includes training and vet fees.

The ROA Badge scheme gives 2500 raceday passes to racehorse owners every year which is another benefit of being a racehorse owner.

Sixth, sponsorship for racing. You are permitted to seek a sponsor for your horse to help with costs. You will receive money in exchange for promoting the sponsors business which might be in the racecards or on horse equipment.

The seventh benefit is having the opportunity to name your racehorse. If you buy a racehorse 2 yrs or younger then it probably won't have been named. So long as the horse is unraced, you will have the privilege of coming up with a name for it. The name must not go beyond 18 characters including the space. The name must not be used before.

The final aspect of racehorse ownership is choosing your racing colours or 'silks'. These colours should distinctly represent the ownership of the horse. Your racing colours should not duplicate anything which is currently registered. Race goer's will want to clearly see who's horses are running. The racehorse owner must register the colours with the British Horse Racing Authority.
