Most popular baby names from 2011

by Marie Anderson

One of the most important tasks you have as a parent is choosing your baby's name. Once chosen there is no going back and the name you choose for them will remain their name through childhood and on into adulthood. When considering this a name that may be one of the most popular baby names 2011 has to offer may not suit a 30 year old man.

Names which are chosen for children change year by year. Some names are popular throughout the years whereas other names come and go in popularity. If you are therefore having difficulty choosing a name then the best place to start is with a list of the names you like, a list of those your partner likes and then a list of any names that appear on both these lists.

Once you have settled on a name for your baby then you will also have to settle on how you spell that name. According to the country you live in, your ethnicity and culture you may choose to spell a name differently to others. Some names have many different spellings for example Isaac can also be spelled Izac, Isaak or Isaac.

If you look at the popular names from the past two to three years then you will be able to tell which names are consistently popular and which names are passing trends, possibly due to an event that happened that year.

For boys the top baby names 2011 were Charlie, James, Oliver, Harry and Jack. Alfie and Jacob were also popular and increasing in popularity compared to the previous year. However Joshua was decreasing in popularity. The two names that were consistently popular were Harry and Jack.

In 2011 the popular girls names where Isabelle, Sophie, Isabella, Emily and Lily. Those names that where heading up the list included Lily, Ava and Isla, with Sophie moving down the list from 2010 when it was number one.

There are many tools that you can use to help choose your baby's name. Some of the most helpful tools are the baby name finder lists that can help you decide on a name that is either popular, or moving up the list of top names in popularity, or one that is unusual and not on any lists at all. If you are looking for a unique name then these baby name top 100 lists can be a great source. They can tell you how popular the names you like are and the likelihood of your child being the only child with that name in their class or whether there may be 5 other children with that name.

The last consideration you need when choosing your baby's name is how it will sound. How will it sound with your surname, how will it sound when called out in a class list and also how will it sound alongside any other children you have. If you have other children then calling the name out after their names may help you decide whether the name fits in your family or not.
