Make the Pump of Your Water Fountains Last Longer

by George Harris

Regular care is essential to keep the pump of your water fountains running smoothly at its full potential. Over time, debris such as pet dander, dust, pollen, grass and leaves can accumulate inside and outside the pump, impeding the flow of water. Debris can even get tangled around the impeller, preventing it from spinning. It's an easy job to take care of the fountain pump and all you need is to have some tools in the house. Proper maintenance of the pump in the water fountain will help extend its life and improve its performance. Pumps are normally warranted for a year but when you keep it well-maintained and totally submersed in the water it can last for about three years.

It helps to understand that implementing a regular amount of overall fountain maintenance is going to reduce the likelihood of problems with the pump. One example is relying on distilled water for indoor fountains prevent mineral deposits from accumulating on the parts and tubes. This is something that often causes poor pump flow and makes many owners think the machine is malfunctioning. If distilled water is unavailable in large quantities, most manufacturers make a chemical treatment available that can prevent and eliminate existing build up.

To keep the fountain pump functioning properly, take care to be certain it is always submersed in water. Not having enough water makes the pump produce noise. So you have to add water until the sound abates. It will take some time for the pump and tubing to clear out any bubbles that will make additional sounds but it will stop when the air is vacated. To keep the pump functioning quietly, discourage it from vibrating against any copper by isolating the pump using an old sponge underneath it to decrease the vibrations.

Cleaning the pump is not difficult and it's very important. Check the manufacturer's instructions on opening the pump before taking it apart and then soak the elements in a vinegar solution. It will help to break down mineral deposits. In hard water areas you may need to clean the pump twice a month but once a month is generally sufficient in soft water areas. Next is to remove the cover and pull out the impeller. Remove any debris that's on the impeller or inside the fountain pump shaft, and replace the impeller and cover. If possible, use distilled water in your fountain. Tap water contains minerals which will cause a build up both on your fountain's surface and within the pump.

Pumps of water fountains are best when they're left to run regularly. Turning the pump on and off often will reduce its life span and can increase the occurrence of debris getting into the pump's components. Generally speaking, the only time you should turn your fountain pump off is when you are washing the fountain or if you are going out of town for an extended time period and will not be able to keep the water level full. You shouldn't turn off your fountain through the night.
