How To Accessorize A Winning Queen Of Hearts Costume

by Andrew Shattuck

A long time ago, some poet put pen to page and wrote the words that we speak as children about a Queen of Hearts and her tarts. While we grow older and more mature, the image of this queen remains with us, at once both beautiful but also deadly in her scarlet red clothing. Here are some tips to help you put together your very own Queen of Hearts costume.

The Queen of Hearts was given a new spin by author Lewis Carroll in the late 1800's. In his story Alice in Wonderland, he tells the tale of a young girl named Alice who must try to make sense of things in a very nonsensical world. Disney has recently released a new movie interpretation of the book in Tim Burton's classic style, where madness is truly mad.

Whether you are dressing up for a masquerade ball, or for Guy Fawkes' Night or even All Hallow's Eve, the Queen of Hearts is a popular costume to wear and can be easy to put together. The basic costume can be as simple as wearing a red dress and red high heeled shoes.

For a more complicated version of this costume, you may choose to wear a replica of the Disney "Queen" or you may try to construct your own using components that work well together. Try wearing the red dress and shoes, but add playing cards from the hearts suite as decorative elements. For the playing card Queen, add board to your red dress to create the stiffness you need to make a playing card. Or try wearing black or white accent pieces such as a ruff or a corset that will contrast against the livid red.

The fiery Queen must, of course, also have red hair. If you are not already blessed with bright red hair, choose a wig color that really pops. If you can, find a wig that is already styled or you will likely have to have it styled for you.

No costume is complete without a full list of accessories that you might use to finish the look. Wear red shoes and gloves, and accessorize with red-colored "gems" in your jewels. The larger the props you use, the more exaggerated they will seem and the more you will stand out. Consider a crown, a necklace, earrings and even a scepter. Add on bright gold rings and bangles.

The Queen of Hearts' make up may be as simple or as difficult as you like. Choose high- quality water-based face paints which you can paint on with a brush for best results to reduce risk of allergic reactions.
