Newly developed video games add to a list of things parents have to learn about. If a parent becomes educated on various game consoles, it is important for them to learn about the games that go with them. Here is a brief glossary of video gaming genre acronyms to help familiarize parents with the terminology their kids are using.
RPG - This stands for Role Playing Games, where players assume the identity of a fictional character regardless of where the action takes place. Players can be anything from animals to powerful leaders. Most RPG games enable gaming against other players in other locations via a console internet connection.
VSG are Vehicle Simulation Games which almost the entire thing takes place behind the wheel of some type of vehicle. The top three consoles offer VSG's that provide a life-like experience to the player, with graphics that are remarkable. Some of the flight simulators are equivalent or even better than the ones used to train commercial and military pilots. Although the standard controllers that come with each console may be used during play, accessories that mimic the real-life controls, such as steering wheels, accelerator pedals and flight joysticks may be purchased to add more reality to the gaming experience.
CMS - This genre includes video games that incorporate Construction and Management Systems. In these players can build cities, manage farms, build businesses or run countries. The main focus of CMS games are profit and economics. Warfare is not the primary focus of these games. The focus is on developing a self-sustaining, vibrant community or business. Using building and management skills properly, a player should be able to create and sustain a plausible lifestyle in the game.
Strategy games are either RTS-Real Time or TBS-Turn Based Systems. Turn Based Systems analyze operations before participating in activities, while Real Time utilize "spur of the moment" actions. RTS only work on internet or computer consoles. TBS games have more possibilities. Real Time games have continuously changing levels. It has been theorized that RTS games encourage thinking and problem solving skills.
Most video game categories do not have acronyms. Classifications such as action or action-adventure, warfare, shooting or party games follow the classic definitions, just as movie genres do.
