Provide Your Family With Fresh Food With Organic Gardening

by Regina H. Short

You must have both patience and skill to grow an organic garden. It's a fun activity that will allow you to enjoy nutritious food that's free of pesticides. This seems to be easier said than done, though, right? Read the following article and you will gain great knowledge you can use while you garden organically.

To discourage garden pests, try making your own organic spray by mixing garlic, chives, or onion with water. To make the spray, just chop peeled garlic, onions or chives very fine and mix half a cup of water with it, and then strain it into the spray bottle.

Making a good bed is an important part of organic gardening. First cut beneath the turf and leave a space. Next, flip the turf, and spread a few inches worth of wood chips across the area. After waiting a few weeks, it can be cut and planted.

Pine makes a much better mulch than you might think. There are many common acidic plants that prefer acidic soil. If you have some of these plants, then pine needles are an easy way to add acid to their bed. Cover the beds with a couple inches of needles and as they decompose, they will disperse acid to the soil.

One thing that sets organic gardening apart from conventional gardening is that commercial pesticides are not used. This will improve your family's overall health, but it does mean you have to be extra vigilant about checking for pest infestations.

If you plant tomatoes, make sure you plant a second batch roughly three weeks after the first ones were done. This allows your harvest to grow in stages. If something ruins one batch of tomatoes, the ones you planted before or afterward may not suffer the same fate.

Be specific about what you would like to grow in your organic garden. There are certain types of vegetables and flowers that may not do well in a particular environment, whereas others will flourish. As an example, take the beautiful rose bush. There are hundreds of variances available and while some will do well in your garden, others won't. So, be sure to choose the specific varieties that are most suited for your planting environment.

Be efficient when working in your garden. Keep all of your tools together; do not waste time looking for them! Set up the tools you will need for your day prior to hitting the garden, then put them away neatly at the end of your gardening session. You may also wish to invest in a tool belt to keep all of your tools within reach while gardening.

As you have learned before, getting your organic garden perfected just takes a little bit of time and patience. Start utilizing the advice provided in this article today, and your organic garden will eventually become truly magnificent. There are a huge number of plants to grow, and with these tips, you'll succeed no matter which plants you ultimately choose.
