The Inside Track About Organic Gardening

by Clarice Assael

Plenty of people picture hippies when they hear the expression "organic gardening". But there is nothing supernatural or mystical about planting your very own garden and using only natural elements to feed it. As soon as you finish this brief article, you'll know that organic gardening did not come about in the 60's.

Hippies aren't the first to try chemical-free gardening techniques. There seemed to be a lot of mass media focus on the hippies, but organic gardening has actually been common practice for decades. For example, the Amish have been doing this since their outset. Right up through today, while so-called modern farmers spread poisonous pesticides and weed killers, the Amish obtain better, indeed fabulous results the old fashioned, organic way. It is even more normal in other areas of this world to find organic growers, who use age-old methods of natural growth.

The notion that your garden will inescapably fall victim to bugs and other pests is common, but misinformed. Nowadays, we've been taught that only costly, toxic chemicals can deal with these natural insect and pest infestations. One simple, natural remedy is the use of birds to control insects and other pests. Birds are easy to attract. Simply build a welcoming and friendly environment for them. Put up a birdhouse together with a source of fresh water, and you should have all the birds you need. As soon as the birds discover all those scrumptious bugs in your garden, and the thoughtfully placed nesting place and water, they'll move in to stay.

Even so, you still need to understand that creating an all-natural, organic garden involves more than just tossing some seeds on the ground and letting Mother Nature do her thing. And you must do a little something to help the process, like planting your seeds the right way and in the right soil. Are you finding your local climate acceptable? Is it favorable to growing what you want? A damp climate works with far different plants when compared to a dry climate. And earthworms are the ideal thing; they break down the soil and make it more conducive for plant growth. Earthworms need time to do their job, so you might quicken things up by purchasing some organic soil to spread and till in. With this approach you will actually be developing your own soil.

You can search online to learn a great deal about organic gardening, or pay a visit to your local nursery. And now that you delight in the health benefits of organic and natural gardening, you will want to pass the information on to your kids?
