Art for Art's Sake versus Art for Sale

by Vicki C. Day

The idea of art for sale is not new; rather it is as old as the art itself. If you talk of the contemporary art, it has never been as expensive as today. The idea gets a realistic proof from the fact that art, in the modern and post modern world constitutes a major portion of the diet for hungry and tired human soul. The art of every kind, which ever was discovered in that age, has always been of great value since prehistoric times. Sometimes, the art may not be for sale which doesn't mean that it has no cost of production; rather it is provided free of cost by the philanthropists who have existed in every era of the human history.

The art for sale is not of a single particular kind; its all subcategories are equally precious and valuable like film, music, painting, literature, photography and sculpture altogether. Like the products of scientific and technological inventions and discoveries, the art of a particular age is not only an asset and treasure for that typical period; it is rather an earlier investment for all the future generations to come. The art pays its value step by step. For example, when a song is written, it is sold in the literary market and earns the author a moderate amount of money depending upon its appealing aesthetic value. It further earns the singer of their livelihood when they sing it. It is surprising to know that every kind and every piece of art has attraction for one or the other, if not for a contemporary man, for someone in the ages to come.

The artistic forms of highly monetary value in the modern society, are songs, movies, pottery, sculpture and paintings. Hollywood, bollywood and lollywood film productions have become the business of billions of dollars. Among these three major film industries, Hollywood enjoys the top rank regarding both investment and the profit earned.

Now there emerges the question of assessing the artistic value and the aesthetic sense embodying the work of art for sale. Richard Wollheim, a renowned philosopher, has developed three different approaches to judge the aesthetic value of a piece of art. Firstly, there comes the realistic approach which regards every single artistic creation of some realistic value. This aesthetic quality is absolute and is independent of any particular human view. Secondly, is the objectivistic approach which like realistic approach also possesses some absolute value, but on the other hand, the determination of this unique value is generally dependent on a specific human viewpoint. Thirdly, there is an approach of relativistic position of a typical work of art. Here the art is not of an absolute value, and it not only depends but also varies and changes when different humans pass through different experiences while reading and absorbing it.

Regarding the nature of the piece of art for sale, as described by Wollheim, it is one of the most elusive traditional problems of the human nature. Anyhow, regardless of any lesser or higher value of the artistic reproduction, the common purpose of art is for art's own sake. Art also fulfills the moral and religious purpose. Moreover, for many, the expression, transportation and the communication of ideas, thoughts and emotion is achieved by the vehicle of art.
