Employing Video Lighting In Photography

by Tanya Hanes

No matter how technologically-advanced your camera is, it won't be able to produce images without light, as light is the most significant aspect of photography. In fact, the word photography means "drawing with light", from the Greek words 'photographs' (light) and 'graphe' (drawing).

To create dramatic effects, the best times to take photographs are during the morning and before the dusk. However, for photo shoots indoors, underwater or during night-time, you can use artificial lighting to create dramatic effects. You can also achieve a particular effect by utilising different kinds of lighting equipment.

Video Lighting For Different Types Of Photography

Weddings are amongst the best occasions in which photography can be of great use. In creating a romantic feel for the couple's photos, a video light can be used. Unlike with flash, which can create a very strong and unflattering effect, video lighting is ideal for studio portraits. Whether you are conducting your photo session in a huge studio or in any dim place, you can always make use of a video light which offers wide range lighting.

Artificial lighting is necessary in taking pictures underwater, too, especially if you are a few metres beneath the ocean surface. In order to capture the real colours of marine life like fishes, corals and crustaceans, you need a reliable lighting equipment to illuminate the surroundings.

Photography Techniques You Can Create With Lighting

The good thing about video lights is that their brightness can be adjusted depending on what you need. You can place a gel in front of an LED video light to produce a warm or tungsten effect. You can also adjust the diffuser to produce soft effects on your photos. Additionally, video lights can be used together with other lighting equipment including speed lights and flashguns for some photography techniques.

To explore other effects it can give, you can try placing the equipment in different locations during the shoot. For instance, if you want flare in the photo you can place the light beneath the subject and move to a position where the edge of the light slightly appears in your camera.
