The Dangers of Sharing your Preparation

by Terrance Franklin

There have been a number of different viewpoints recently with regards to the disclosure of one's prepping activities. From programs such as Doomsday Preppers where people are in the open discussing their plans with national television, to online communities like this one where we will discuss plans and tactics without unveiling the actual nature of our ideas, to personal conferences where nothing is stored in writing, the thoughts of other people actually run the gamut.

There are positive aspects to unveiling one's prepping actions. The main one is the selfless hope to get those near you to assist themselves to prepare. If we never discuss our preparations with our close friends, we must ignore their chances when difficulty arises. It is tough to admit this. Many people do it for the wrong factors, it's sure that some of the people featured on Doomsday Preppers as well as celebrity figures online do it for the recognition. Ultimately, a lot of people share their prepper pursuits because they believe in power in numbers.

Obviously there are drawbacks too. I recently read a write-up on someone who was featured on the show named Alfred Dutton, who was prosecuted by the local government as well as sentenced to twenty one months in prison. The person who reported him to the government bodies was his ex-wife's man who was approached by Dutton to show him a few of the preps he was making. As the man who had been looking after his little girl for part of the time together with his ex-wife, Dutton had reason to be dedicated to his preparation.

Additionally there is the idea of products being identified by the community and eventually unsavory characters. It is also likely that who are people reached out to in the best times will use underhanded tactics after a collapse. All bets are off on the decency of people when their kids are starving.

Thus should we be planning under wraps? Scenarios like this make it possible to think so. There isn't any strict answer regarding how you will divulge (or not share) your preparation plans. Everything has to be approached from a point of view of danger as opposed to reward. The bottom line is keeping these framed from the viewpoint of a downfall.

For example, let's use teaching friends about the importance of making a bug out plan. Without revealing your own ideas it can be very helpful to have another person you can depend on in a crisis situation. Following up and ensuring that they are prepared is a win-win.

On the flip side, talking about the explosives that you are making in your house (like Alfred Dutton was) doesn't have much of a compensation. Talking about how to make food or self-defense with weapons would have been much more useful to Alfred's daughter if that was his priority. On the other hand, based on the immediate compensation of having something cool to show your ex-wife's boyfriend is small compared to the very genuine threat of being reported to be harboring illegitimate explosives. Regrettably for a lot of of us, a person thinking about going on a killing spree and the person preparing to secure their loved ones do not look any different from an inventory perspective to the law.
