Remember The Past With Old Metal Signs

by Corinne Hyde

Old metal signs were first seen in the 19th century when they were painted by hand and used to advertise a myriad of different products. As the century wore on, they began to be lithographed and were hung outside stores to help sell the items inside. Everything from food, beer and soft drinks to detergents and gasoline were all advertised in this manner. There are collectors today who spend large amounts of money for signage which is still in good condition.

During World War II this all changed. This type of signage was no longer produced and many items already existing were melted down for use in the war. After the war years, with the technological advancements which had taken place, plastic and steel were the materials preferred in making of signage.

Collectors go to great lengths and expense to obtain this type of signage for their collections. There are some which are more desirable than others such as those with images rather than words. Images of women and of pets are particularly popular.

A collector needs to learn how to verify the authenticity of a sign. It may be stamped with the date it was manufactured. If not, other means are needed to verify its age. Many of these items are rusted from exposure to the elements. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Condition, visual appeal, and scarcity are important influences on value.

Today there has been a huge revival of interest in anything vintage and this includes signage. It is not only collectors willing to spend money to build up their collections who are interested in these signs. They are desired for a number of reasons today, from decorating homes to throwing a party with retro flair.

This renewed interest has led to reproductions of classics becoming available. These reproductions look just like the genuine article but they come at a price which suits the budget. One can purchase a sign suitable for any room of the house and even those which may be used in the garden and pool area.

Some companies even offer the option of ordering a custom made sign. This can be ordered with a name or special message or photo, yet still present the visual vibe of a sign made long ago. These items can make the perfect gift.

Many people today are decorating their houses in vintage style and they love adding signage in rooms to create a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. A kitchen with an image of fresh eggs or a coffee cup adds flair. These items are also durable and damage resistant which means they can be used in laundry rooms and bathrooms with great effect.

Retro signage can also add character and a sense of history to a business premises. Cafeterias are being decorated with food themed vintage signage. Garages have old gasoline ones displayed. Many businesses also use vintage signage as warnings, letting people know something and making them smile at the same time.
