Don't dawdle when taking photographs. If you hesitate, you may miss the moment you are trying to capture because of your subject moving. The more rapidly you can photograph your subject, the more likely you are to get your desired shot.

Before you click the shutter, think about the purpose of your shot. For example, some subjects will look better photographed and framed vertically instead of horizontally. Photo editing can only do so much, so get the picture right the first time around.

Set your white balance manually. You can be in control of your own lighting and exposure if you choose your own settings for white balance. This will give you the proper balance and take out the blue or yellow tint from incandescent or florescent bulbs and change the entire mood of the image.

Your camera can serve as a great tool for when you are taking shots. Try blurring the background and focusing on the main subject by decreasing your field depth.

Fiddle around with different shutter speeds to learn their effects. As you try to capture subjects in motion, opt for a faster shutter speed. This eliminates blurring and distortion, and allows for quicker responses. This can really make all the difference when photographing in fast action environments. Motion blur can be taken advantage of by using a shutter speed that is slow. The special effects resulting from shooting streams and waterfalls with this type of photography are especially stunning.

If you don't know a model, try to make them feel as comfortable with you as possible. Many people see photographers as a possible threat. Be sociable and down-to-earth, start a conversation with them, and politely ask if it's okay for you to photograph them. Reassure people that the goal of your photography efforts is to capture and create art, and not to violate their privacy.

Try new techniques, and be brave enough to take thoroughly original photos. A good photographer will be able to convey a sense of style with his or her pictures, and show a meaningful point of view. Avoid the same pictures that have been done over a thousand times. Look for different angles to emphasize different aspects of your subject.

Pick out photos that are distinctive or demonstrate a new way of looking at a familiar subject. While a memory card may be able to hold thousands of photos, you still need to reduce your number down to your favorites.
