To understand the various types of lighting, you need to experiment with your camera's settings, as well as natural and artificial light. All kinds of light has some color, you need to know what kind of lighting you are taking photos in.

You need to watch out for whether your pictures are under or overexposed. Read the instructions that came with your camera, and learn how to read the light exposure level, or histogram. This measures the exposure in every shot and it will enable you to know whether it is under or over exposed so that you'll be able to prevent this from happening next time.

Play with the manual white balance feature. Interior photography often comes with a yellowish hue due to the light available from light bulbs. You could change the room's lighting, but instead look to your camera's white balance setting. It can completely change the feel of the room. Your photos will almost instantly appear more professional.

For landscape photography, attempt to capture the natural depth of the view. Establish a sense of scale by placing an object within the foreground of your picture. You can increase the overall sharpness of your picture by using a small aperture set appropriately for the type of camera you are using.

When taking photos in bright sunlight, use your flash to eliminate any shadows that may form on your subject. When you fail to use your flash in these settings, the result can be a loss of detail and subjects being lost in the shadows.

Get closer to the subject to get a better shot. This allows you to eliminate backgrounds that are distracting, and it also makes it easier to properly frame what you are photographing. If you are taking a portrait, getting closer allows you to notice facial expressions and other details. Smaller details are usually overlooked when the picture is taken from far away.
