Everybody has opinions about ab workouts: which individual exercises are the most effective, whether you should do something old or new, whether it should be done on a machine, how often they need to be done, etc. No matter what kind of approach you choose what is important is that you work your whole body. This will actually help your ab region because, in addition to toning your muscles groups, you will be burning calories. The following are some ab workouts that many fitness experts recommend.

One of the things that you need to remember is that, even if you do ab workouts regularly, you won't see your abdominal muscles until you lose weight (if you have a lot of weight to lose). The truth is that, if you are overweight, you can do all sorts of exercises for your abs and you will gain strength and fitness but you won't see your ab muscles in the mirror because you'll still have a layer of fat covering them up. To make this more challenging, you can do leg lifts during your plank. If you're not used to these exercises, you should do them on mats first before using the medicine ball.

You may think of ab workouts as exercises that specifically target the abdominal region, but doing cardio workouts is at least as important, especially if you need to lose any fat around your mid-section. There are lots of good cardiovascular exercises that you can do, like jogging, speed walking or using machines like treadmills, exercise bicycles or elliptical machines. Just a half an hour of cardio workout and some targeted moves for the ab region will do quite a lot to help raise your overall fitness as well as make it easier for you to define your abdominal muscles since you will be burning the fat in your midsection.

Ab workouts, then, can take many different forms, although all the exercises end up targeting the same muscle groups.

Besides doing ab exercises, though, you need to make sure you also do cardio and resistance training for the rest of your body. If you keep working and are patient (it can take a while to see the results you desire), you can get quite a lot of benefit from doing the ab workouts in this article. Try to make sure each workout is good and you'll get real improvement over time.
