Gaming solo on your console with a one player adventure is very different from logging online and interacting with hundreds of other player controlled characters.
Regardless of what happens in the world of video game design, however, the best games will always be those that keep gamers excited. The games that were vastly popular in the past did not look amazing visually, but they definitely caught gamers' attention with their concepts and gameplay style.
