Using Internet Forums To Improve Photography Technique

by Cyrus Caleb Sanchez

Pictures of people should be a lot more than simply a picture of their faces. There are interesting features, like the hands, feet and legs, that can be the subject of you photos.

When it comes to capturing great shots of people, you should aim to have a slightly blurred backdrop. When the background is fully focused, the viewer will have trouble determining just what the focus of the picture was supposed to be. This is most easily accomplished by moving your subject further away from the backdrop.

Before photographing a wedding, try taking some unusual pictures of the setup, like a flower, or a makeup bag. You just might stumble on a great shot as well.

Make sure you read the manual that came with your camera. Manuals may be off-putting because of their thickness and bulk. Most people throw manuals away without giving them a second look. However, the manual is an important source of information and should be taken advantage of. By taking the time to read the manual and familiarize yourself with your camera, you will eliminate frustration and take much better pictures.

You need not stand directly in front of an object to photograph it. Try interesting angles such as shooting from above, underneath, moving from side to side of the subject, or holding the camera at waist level.

You should think about using a flash when you are taking photos outdoors. A bright light can create interesting shadows. This can be solved simply by tinkering around with the fill flash settings on most cameras. The flash your camera produces will push light into the dark places on your subject's face.

Before you take a photo, do not move and hold your breath. When you move quickly, even if the movement is minute, it will interrupt the shot's clarity and ruin a shot. Take a second right before you are going to hit the shutter button, don't breath and take a straight shot.

Would you like to take some shots of your subjects covered with rain? Mimic the look of rain drops even when it's sunny by spritzing your subject with a spray bottle full of water.

If you like the old style that is associated with using a camera that uses film then you should pick one up from a secondhand store and see how you like it. Use black and white film with a 200 ISO for a dramatic effect that can work in many situations. Try having prints made on different papers, like fiber-based papers.
