Basic Lighting Techniques That Photographers Can Use

by Fra Arellano

Becoming a photographer has never been easier, thanks to the latest advancements in digital photography. Yet, if you want to succeed in the field of photography, it would not be enough to own a technologically-advanced camera. Rather, your knowledge and ability to use proper lighting will determine the quality of images you can create. After all, light is the most essential aspect of photography.

Usually the best times of the day to produce dramatic photo shoots are during the morning and before nightfall. However, you can create various effects for indoor, underwater, or nighttime photo shoots by using artificial lighting. There are different types of lighting you can use in photography to achieve the specific effect that you want.

Video Light For More Dramatic Images

Weddings are amongst the greatest occasions wherein photography is deemed indispensable. To produce images with a romantic feel for the bridal couple, a video light can be used. While flash gives a strong and unflattering light effect, video lighting is excellent for studio portraits. A video light is perfectly suitable to brighten up a dim location for photo shoots as well as huge studios, as it offers a wide range of illumination.

Underwater photography needs proper lighting, too, especially when you are some metres below the sea surface. With a handheld underwater video light, you don't have to worry about illuminating the surroundings to capture wonderful images and colours of fishes, corals and crustaceans.

Other Photography Techniques Using Video Light

Although video lights produce very strong light at maximum capacity, you can easily adjust its level of lighting. You can put a gel in front of an LED video light to produce a warm or tungsten effect. For soft photo effects, you can control the diffuser which is commonly present in LED video lights. Moreover, this lighting equipment is compatible with other lighting tools like flashguns and speed lights which you can use for certain photography techniques.

To explore other effects it can give, you can try placing the equipment in different locations during the photo shoot. For example, if you want flare in the photo you can place it beneath your subject and move to a position where the edge of the light slightly appears in your camera.
