Can Kids Utilize City Bikes Well?
by Rob Sutter
At the risk of sounding like an old man, I don't feel as though kids today get out as much. While I enjoyed my video games even back then, I was able to take part in outdoor activities such as going to a park or being with my friends at a playground. Cycling was also a pastime of mine if I was able to get my dad to ride with me. Today, I think more kids need to have city bikes and enjoy them for all that they are worth, which is a lot.
I feel like the first thing to note about city bikes is just what their physical benefits are. Companies like Linus market all sorts of bicycles to the public but just as important is their focus on utilizing them as a means of travel. The physical benefits are there, since riding a bicycle for any elongated amount of time calls for calories to be burned. This definitely trumps traveling by car by a mile, to put it figuratively. Of course, kids are going to be a difficult audience to leave an impression on.
I don't think it's a lie to say that there's a certain attraction when it comes to the Internet and video games. They've even absorbed more of my time than I'd care to admit but kids shouldn't spend every waking moment with these devices when the outside world calls for them. Again, at the risk of sounding like an old man, there has to be less reliance on these devices. How can this be done in favor of bike riding, though?
Commuter biking should be looked at because it clearly demonstrates the positives bicycles can have apart from keeping in shape. For one, those who utilize these very machines find themselves getting around faster especially in packed areas like cities. What is probably even more fulfilling is using these bikes in an environment with others. You will constantly find yourself traveling on bicycle with other people and that sense of unity is pretty neat in its own right.
That very sense of unity can carry over well if one child's group of friends grows to have their own biking circle. It could just be a single pack of kids from school who are simply getting outside in order to ride and, to a greater extent, stay fit. Hopefully this will be enough to turn the tide and get the youth in on this movement. If the amount of other positives didn't do it, then there's no question that this idea should.
