Your Guide to Some Best Practices to Use for Trout Fishing

by Robt Eckhart

One of the first things you need to do in order to be successful when you fish, is to learn the traits and quirks of the fish you want to catch. The more information you have about your target fish, the more success you will experience. Trout are very smart and it's almost imperative that you know how they act and what they like. It's not sufficient to just show up and start fishing. You will not have any success if you don't know anything about trout. To help you get started correctly with trout fishing, here are three important tips you can use.

For newbie trout fishermen, one of the most testing things is learning where the trout like to congregate. One of the ways to gain this insight is by understanding the role of water temperature. Trout have a need for higher amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water. Surface action and the temperature of the water have a lot of responsibility, in regards to the dissolved oxygen concentration. Brown and rainbow are examples of trout that will put up with elevated water temperatures, as long as they can get the amount of oxygen they require. If the water is warmer, then look for places where there's some current moving. Ordinarily, you can search for stirs and ripples that transpire because of the moving current. These places will have a higher oxygen concentration and possibly the trout you're looking for.

Trout flies that have been successful are sometimes difficult for the human eye to see. But, unlike humans, trout have excellent vision. And that quality lets them see the small flies that we can barely see once it gets far enough away. The way the trout sees how you are presenting the fly will be important. It's not easy to fool a trout into thinking that an artificial fly is a real bug, if the actions of the fly don't seem natural to the trout. Take a few minutes and watch what the actual bugs do at different times of the day, and then mimic their behavior. Maybe you don't know this, the phases of the moon will have an effect on trout activity and you will see that they move around more when the moon is in the right places during its phases. Certainly, you will have to be on the water or close by, as well as fishing if you want to reap the benefits. Weather is another thing that has an effect on fish and trout, specifically. You have to know the weather conditions that will impact the dissolved oxygen in the water. Also, going for trout on a totally clear day with a bright sunny blue sky will be more challenging. You would be surprised how easy it is for trout to hear and see you coming and this is a result of their acute senses. You should not make any noise and do your best not to be seen because believe it or not, they can see you standing on the bank.

If you have never used live bait for trout, then you must try it because it works very well. Learning as many methods that are available will only make you a better fisherman. But, with live bait give the worm its due because this can give you terrific results with trout, and to use this bait with the greatest effect, be sure you use a smaller hook. What happens with bigger hooks is the worm will wrap itself around the hook and then it doesn't look like a worm anymore.

One very common mistake made by inexperienced trout anglers is using hooks that are just too big. Next to the importance of the size of your pole and reel, the hook size is critical. If you want to try your hand at fly fishing instead, the hooks are small and already set. Nevertheless, if you are a beginner, it isn't a good idea to begin with fly fishing. Trout fishing is enough of a challenge for the moment. The rule of thumb is to not use a hook that is larger than a size 8. That way you'll have a better chance for success. Size 8 is the best size, but if you like, you can use size 10. It's just that size 8 is better and makes your life simpler.

Here's a little secret for better trout fishing and it has to do with the hooks you use. The secret is to put live worms on gang hooks. Successful anglers have been doing this for decades. Here are some more secrets and strategies for using this set up. You can use more than one gang hook that are baited with live worms. Once your hooks are baited up, simply let the current take them. The response to this can be very successful. If you don't have a current - for example in a lake - gang hook rigs can still be used with success. What you want to do is use floating baits made especially for trout with your gang hooks. You will have the best chances for success if you match your tackle and gear to the conditions under which you will be fishing. When you don't take the time to do this, you will have a struggle to be successful with your fishing, and it will be your own fault. Take the time to research more information and have a solid grasp on the trout fishing tools of the trade. Then, your days out fishing will be rewarded.
