Consider That The DJ Is The New Rock Star

by Cadence Gladwell

If you have not checked into the music scene lately, you may be surprised to learn that the DJ is the new rock star. Whereas in the past there was a music scene controlled by record company promotional campaigns, online methods of bringing music to the masses have taken hold. The innovation of new artists has created a new wave of popular music, and these artists are able to fill not just music clubs, but entire arenas with their performances.

Home recording technology, available through software, has been the driving force behind these new artists. No longer are performers limited to technology and steep fees charged for use of professional recording studios, once the domain solely of celebrities. This type of technology means people can work at home and create highly produced music.

A new era of marketing when it comes to music has given rise to an entirely new set of artists who blend together existing pieces of music. This style has been evolving on home computers for years, and the online marketplace allows these artists to bypass the traditional methods of promotion and take control of their own careers. This new market model means many more new performers are able to break ground and present their work to a wider audience.

This level of popularity and presence of these artists in online media and Internet sales can translate into huge ticket sales in arena venues. These performances are reminiscent of the old-school stars, without the bands but with lots of loud music and plenty of impressive light show techniques interwoven with the music. These performers gain the same fervor from fans as would singing celebrities of the past.

Part of the reason that this type of music has evolved and surpassed many other types is that previous formats no longer exist to introduce new music performers in a broad manner. Many radio stations are tied to specific formats that prove to be popular in larger markets, which may tend to lean heavily toward established hits. This can override promotion of newer, unproven artists in some cases. Television programming that used to be devoted to new music also has changed formatting to reality-based issue oriented shows and fewer venues to showcase music.

With TV and radio focusing on their own established markets, this leaves the Internet as a primary method of reaching people worldwide. These performers have social media at their disposal to work on promotions and to build audiences. Online videos offer them a chance to put together their own performances independently for mass distribution.

Commercials have been able to offer these artists a lot more national exposure. Bands in the past tended to meet public scorn if they attached themselves to commercial use, and would even fight legal battles to keep their music out of this line of promotion. Today's artists see it strictly as another way to promote their music without it jeopardizing their own integrity.

You may discover in your own city that the DJ is the new rock star the next time you journey into a club. Take in the scene as a whole and watch how the audience responds to the person onstage. You may be reminded of past performers in this new era of entertainment.
