MMA Fighters With The Most Well-Rounded Arsenal

by Rod Bourgoine

The whole idea behind mixed martial arts is that fighters learn and utilize a variety of skills from different disciplines. While there are fighters who generally rely on one particular type of fighting, such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu, here are a few great fighters that have an impressively full arsenal of martial arts skills.

Anderson Silva definitely springs to mind when you think about well-rounded fighters. Being Brazilian, it might be assumed that he would rely mainly on jiu-jitsu in the Octagon. This is a poor assumption because although Anderson certainly does have a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he also has black belts in Judo, Taekwondo and Muay Thai. He also has fought as a professional boxer. Oh, he also has a yellow belt in Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dancing.

Georges St.-Pierre is another excellent MMA fighter with a solid pro fighting record (23-2) and a solid MMA arsenal. St.-Pierre began his training at a young age, learning Kyokushin karate at age 7. He now holds a 3rd dan black belt in Kyokushin Kaikan, as well as a 1st-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and black belts in Shidokan and Gaidojutsu. Gaidojutsu was developed by fight trainer Greg Jackson and incorporates wrestling, judo and kickboxing. Shidokan is a form of karate, particularly popular in Okinawa.

Benson Henderson's mother was actually the one who first got him interested in martial arts, insisting that he and his brother study taekwondo as it would teach them about their Korean heritage. He earned a black belt in that martial art and also wrestled in college, earning the rank of NAIA All-American twice. He also has brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and all of this practice and study has led him to an exemplary 18-2 pro record.

Fedor Emelianenko is arguably one of the best fighters in the history of MMA and he has been around for more than 10 years with 40 professional fights and 35 victories to his name. He has won several Sambo World Championships and holds the rank of 1st Razryad Grand Master in Sambo, which is a Russian combat sport which translates closely to "self-defense with weapons." He also has a black belt in Judo and has trained as a boxer and as a Muay Thai fighter.

While he might lack the black belts, Jon Jones certainly has an impressive MMA record and displays expert skills in wrestling, Gaidojutsu and Muay Thai. Jones was a champ high school wrestler and trained with Greg Jackson, the inventor of Gaidojutsu, a highly versatile style of MMA fighting. Jones has lost only one fight, and even that was due to being disqualified and not from a knockout or submission.
