First Communion: Planning From Education To Communion Dresses

by Janet J. Bonnell

Young girls are typically excited about communion dresses rather than anything else but there are other important things that you will need to take time planning. Spring is when the actual event occurs, which is near the ages seven and eight or the second grade. However parents need to start making plans for this event before the second grade year actually starts.

Before your daughter can even start thinking about her communion dress, she has to enroll in and complete a religious education course that meets the requirements of the church. The religion education classes involve a number of activities to be completed. One is memorizing the Lord's Prayer. Additionally, they will learn all of the ideals about their religion. Additionallly, attending confession is also a requirement that needs to be carried out before first communion can take place.

The ceremony date for your little girl's first communion is set close to the completion of the class. Depending on the size of the church, just one date may be required for the actual ceremony or you may get to choose a date that is convenient. You will have several things you have to do before this date arrives. Up until now, you really just had to enroll your child in the religion education class and make sure she got to it. But now you really need to get some work done.

To plan for the unique day, your daughter will need a communion dress, which must be white to symbolize purity. Do not forget that socks and shoes have to be white as well. Some churches might additionally require a veil and gloves. Passing down communion dresses is something that a few families choose to do instead of buying a brand new dress for each generation. Other families make the day special for their daughter by allowing her to choose her own dress. Regardless of how it is obtained, whether it is purchased, borrowed or passed down, the dress only had to meet two requirements. Most vitally, the style of the dress must meet the rules that the church requires. The only other requirement that you have is that your daughter likes the dress and sees the day as one of happiness.

A lot of families opt to plan a large family celebration for this special event. According to what you prefer, you can have a large party or just something small and simple. It is just a special day to celebrate for your daughter and this should be carried out in any way that your family finds most enjoyable. A special gift is usually presented to the child who partakes in her first communion. The most frequent gifts include a bible, rosary or cross necklace.
