Top Things to Consider When Choosing Maternity Clothing
by Ashley Wyatt
Pregnancy is a wonderful time for a woman because it means bringing a beautiful baby in to the world. It also means having a body change to accommodate that baby. Here are some tips to help you choose the best maternity clothing pieces for your wardrobe.
1. Choose clothing styles that you normally wear. Don't purchase clothes that are out of your comfort zone. As a pregnant woman you will automatically grab people's attention. Dressing in clothing that you don't feel pretty or comfortable in will only make you feel more self-conscious. The trick is to find clothing that still fits your normal style, so you can feel confident and beautiful.
2. Take the time to really find the right maternity pants for your body. Even the prettiest, most flattering top won't help you if your pants don't fit right and are unflattering. Maternity pants have a bad habit of sliding down, so find pants that fit your curves and still stay up.
Belly bands are also a great alternative. Belly bands are an elastic-like band of fabric that you wear over the top unbuttoned pants to allow you to extend the life of your normal jeans during pregnancy. Simply wear a long shirt to cover your band and people will assume you are wearing a layered shirt if it shows.
3. Buy transitional pieces for your maternity wardrobe. There will be times when your body is in a "transitional" period. This period is when you are starting to outgrow your normal clothing, but haven't grown enough to fill out a maternity outfit. Having a few transitional pieces can really help during that month or two while your body is transitioning from not looking pregnant to definitely being pregnant. These pieces are wonderful to keep and use again after the baby is born.
4. Don't hide your curves. Show them off. Nothing can make a pregnant woman look larger than she is than wearing an oversized, boxy shirt. Accentuate your style by showing your baby bump off. Wear clothing that fits your form. A quick and easy way to give your tunic or baggy shirts some dimension is to add a belt above your belly. This will highlight a thin area, and still show off your cute belly at the same time.
5. Purchase a few dark colored clothing items. As a golden rule, dark colors have a slimming affect. Having a few navy and black tops and pants can really come in handy on those days when we might be feeling a little uncomfortable with our pregnancy weight gain.
6. Remember to layer. When you are pregnant, wearing clothing layers can really come in handy during those times when you feel like you are in a sauna and your family and friends feel like they are in a blizzard. Wear jackets and cardigans that can easily be removed or put on, depending on your fluctuating body temperature.
