Tips For Maintaining A Beautiful Garden
by Johnathan Black
Gardening offers numerous benefits for those that choose to take it up as a hobby. One of the more important of those benefits is that it makes us more self-sufficient. Even if we grow flowers, we learn skills that could be turned to producing our own food. The tips outlined in this article will help you toward that goal.
To save on energy, cost and resources, don't plant more crops in your garden than you are able to use. If you're not planning on selling your crops at a market, planting more than you can use will just end up wasting resources and space in your garden. If you have extra space, look into planting a variety of crops instead.
A wonderful treat for your indoor houseplants is to take them outside periodically and let them bask in the glory of a summer rainstorm. You will be treating them to higher humidity and longer hours of daylight that far surpasses the stale conditions they may be getting indoors! You will want to minimize too much direct sunlight and make sure your plant containers have good drainage holes so that extra rainwater doesn't collect to cause root rot. Some quality time in the outdoors will pay off with lush, healthy plants year-round!
Weed the garden often and early. Plan on a weeding schedule for the garden at least three times. The first should be five to seven days after sowing, and again seven to ten days after that. The third time should be three to four weeks after planting. By this time the plants should be rooted well enough to add mulching and sufficient leaves to shade the surface.
Grow interesting foliage plants for a show-stopping display. Look for plants with unusual and colorful foliage to add year round interest to your garden. Many people tend to focus mainly on flowering plants, not realizing that the blooming season is sometimes quite limited. The most beautiful flowering plants can often have boring foliage, meaning that when the flowers are finished blooming, you are left with quite a dull garden. Add interest with plants grown purely for their foliage. Interesting varieties include hosta, coleus, canna, euphorbia and fatsia.
Sow plants in succession to each other for a steady harvest. When growing vegetables such as corn, snap peas, and lettuce that mature on a very predictable schedule, make two or three sowings two weeks apart to lengthen the harvest season. You can also plant two different varieties on the same day with different maturation times to ensure a longer season.
Gardening does indeed go hand in hand with many benefits. There are numerous societal benefits to gardening. Whether we are growing food plants or purely decorative ones, they all add to the aesthetics and beauty of our world. Gardening provides even more important benefits to the gardener, by instilling a sense of self-sufficiency.
