Which Model Train Scale Should I Select?
by Jay Reynolds
Consider the following factors when ascertaining which scale to choose:
1. Do you have limited space available?
2. What is the most suitable size of model train equipment to work with.
3. The accessories that are available for the scale you have selected.
Let us look further into the items above.
1. Do you have enough space available?
A layout in HO scale is approximately half the size of a similar layout in O Scale. HO scale turning radius's are much tighter the O Scale turning radius's. The tunnel size of HO scale is also much smaller than O Scale. It is also much easier to mask mistakes on HO Scale than on other bigger scales. In short, the bigger the scale, the more difficult it is to make the layout look realistic. This is why, in the main, HO Scale is becoming popular.
What amount of space will you need?
A 6 X 4 layout space should be a sufficient area to create a nice HO scale layout incorporating a continuous loop. Should you not be in a position to acquire such space, you may need to consider smaller scales like the N scale. N Scale would need only about 30% of the space required by HO Scale.
2. The size of the model train equipment you would like to work with.
Older folk tend to be the majority of railroaders. As a result, it is important to select a scale that will suit such disadvantages such as poor eyesight. Working on very small scales such as Z Scale can be annoying when you cannot see the detail properly. HO scale upwards is a better choice in these situations, especially with children where the bigger scales are easier to handle and derail less frequently.
3. What accessories are available for your chosen scale?
The demand for HO Scale due to it's popularity has driven up the demand for accessories in this scale. More manufacturers have therefore come aboard in the HO scale category. If you are incorporating running DCC's or digital controllers, then HO scale is the preferred choice of scale.
