Why Collect Old Gas Station Signs
by Angelita Wall
Most people have probably glimpsed of old gas station signs though not very often. They are easily noticeable because of their color and significant difference compared to modern signage. However, not everyone really knows of their value. Knowing its worth will help one appreciate them and their potential values.
Indeed they may be very artistic and rare. However, serious collectors gather them for another reason also. This is because they recognize that it is in human nature to be fascinated with artifacts that has strong connection to the past and these items have it in them. They spend large amounts just to add them to their collection. They are willing to cash out on those having good conditions. They do intensive researches just to find only genuine items which is hard these days.
Today, refueling stations can be found almost at every corner with large signs illuminated by electricity to capture attention. However, it was not like that before. During the earliest days, gasoline was actually being sold in drugstores. The existence of gas depots were not for refueling purposes but for repairs. Soon, with the arrival of many cars, they came in demand, pumps arrive, and the need for signage became extremely popular.
The materials they are made from were different during those days. Porcelain was their major composition before. The craft of fabricating them was not yet widely used in America and products have to be imported from Germany. Iron was formed to provide framework and powdered glass was then added to produce a highly durable signage that is weather resistant and has an attractive finish.
They were hung on walls or hinged on stands so people can view them from opposite directions. The pumps on depots have these plates attached to them also so they will be able to advertise the brand of gasoline that they contain. Other vehicle related products such as spark plugs and oils are also advertised through this way.
Indeed, there are survivors of these materials that can still be found. However, most are rarely in mint conditions. These items, unfortunately, were melted for use during the second world war after which replacements were used for them. The industry catering to this had a rapid change. Old types were removed then stored. The use of plastic materials with electric lighting replaced them.
Collectors covet those old porcelain signs because they are rare. Some of them focus on large brands that are very common during those times while some would focus on brands that are very rare. However, others would not focus on any as long as they are genuine. Whatever a collector focuses in is their rarity that makes them collect it.
They have groups which get together from time to time. During these gatherings, they either trade their collection or sell them. Members also get to learn new information from their fellow collectors during such events.
