The Value Of Paracord Braiding

by Jill Kellie

Paratroopers in World War Two were the ones who originally learned about the value of paracord braiding. This material was used in the suspension lines that helped make a parachute useful and kept a parachutist from plunging to the earth. Since those days, the value of this product has only increased for military personnel, survivalists, and crafts people. People now make a myriad of products out of this material from bracelets and whips. Survivalists rely on this product to help them when they are faced with a number of emergencies.

Paracord is a light rope that is made out of nylon. Nylon strands are braided together to form the base of the strand. Inside are two ply strands that help to give the rope its strength. The material is very flexible and is resistant to rot and mildew that can affect ropes made out of other materials. Nylon will not shrink when exposed to water. The ability to hold up in different environments has proved to be very helpful to many people.

A soldier landing safely on the ground will often take his parachute apart. They will take the cord for use in the field. This material is helpful when one is carrying a lot of items on their back. They can tie smaller items to a backpack so they will not get lost while traveling.

Inside the rope are seven smaller two ply strands. These strands can be separated from the main cord and used for various purposes. One thing that some people have done when they are in a survival mode is make fishing line out of a single strand. This can help a person eat when food is hard to come by.

Survivalists are fond of what is also called 550 Cord. The name comes from the amount of weight a single strand can handle. If one has to pull something that weighs 1500 pounds, then they would want to wrap a strand around it three times in order to handle the load without breaking.

One might face an emergency where cord will come in handy. This could be when someone breaks an arm and needs to have a sling to keep the extremity immobile. A person could cut themselves and might need a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

Parachute cord was first developed to help parachutists float safely to the ground. People immediately began using it for many other purposes where a good rope was needed. Paracord braiding is used to make bracelets so one can carry a supply of this material wherever they go.
