Figuring Out the Most Difficult Obstacle Event

by Rob Sutter

As someone who has watched events like "American Gladiator" and "Takeshi's Castle" so much during his youth, I like being able to see people tackling one challenge after another. It's almost like these people are superhuman, going about such actions that people who are out of shape could only dream of participating in. It almost makes me want to go get back into shape so that I can see about taking part in them. I'd be lying if I said that more than one obstacle event has challenge to it.

I remember being young and my dad bringing me to the gym that he and my grandpa had gone to time and time again. Each time we were there, I wanted to try out the rock climbing wall that was set up because it was such a departure from the typical weight sets that seemed to go on for miles. I loved being able to climb, even though I did wind up failing to reach the top more than a few times. It was clear that there was challenge present but where did it come from?

When you're talking about a difficult obstacle event, I feel like climbing this wall has a lot of potential for the spot. These walls can often become very tall and without many ledges for you to latch onto, it's clear that the level of challenge is going to climb. You may also become tired much more easily thanks to the effort it takes to climb upon this sort of wall. Athletic events the likes of Spartan Race will be able to support this kind of obstacle.

Of course, the environment is going to play a part as to whether an event is going to be tougher than how it would be regularly. For instance, let's say that you're playing football with a group of friends and it starts to rain. When this kind of element is added, it's almost like the entire game shifts since people can slip and fall into the mid, to name a couple of instances. Everyone is going to desire a bright, sunny day with these events but there's always a chance for error.

When it comes to obstacle events that TV programs like these have showcased, there isn't one that seems to be a cakewalk. Perhaps it's for the betterment of the audience because tougher challenges are going to keep people tuned in so that someone may, one day, overcome them. You're not going to want to get behind someone who's running through an easy set of trials, will you? We want to see these runners and competitors thrive, no matter how great the challenge may be.
