Helpful Gardening Design Tips

by Jacqueline Martello

Garden designing is basically the way you plan and lay out plants in your garden. It can be as easy as planting a few rows of vegetables or as complicated as having a professional landscaper creating an elaborate scheme. Designing a garden can be done in a variety of ways. It all depends on what you prefer, how much room you have and what type of plants you're growing.

Regardless of the type of garden you have, it should have a noticeable center or focal point. While this mainly applies to large or medium sized gardens, small gardens can have a focal point as well. You can use something fancy such as a fountain or trellis or something simple like a small outdoor sculpture. This will be one of the first things that is noticed when people look at your garden. A garden bench offers another possibility as people can relax and admire the garden while sitting on it. Give some careful thought to what you want as the central point because if attractive it can add to your gardens appeal.

A lot of people don't have a lot of space but they still want gardens that are appealing and thriving. This is still possible if you are creative in the use of your space. If you haven't got a lot of space, it is important to focus on the plants, veggies and flowers that don't need much space. You can also use levels to make your garden look bigger.

This can mean taking advantage of a naturally occurring slope or maybe using plant stands or adding some steps. Another tactic to make a small garden look bigger is to install mirrors. When your garden has fences or walls in it, use them well by decorating them in an attractive fashion. When you have a small garden, you have to make optimum use of every bit of space you have.

A flower garden is meant to be an environment of beauty, and also one that has a pleasing aroma. Just make sure your flowers are put into an area that has the ability to provide adequate sunshine and are growing in the correct soil type. Each and every plant variety will reach their own individual size; so you will need to be vigilant and not pack them into a smaller space than they will need. If you can draw in some butterflies or birds into your flower garden; you will highlight an already enthralling level of charm. A bird bath or feeder would likely bring a few birds into your garden. Butterflies and some birds adore flowers that provide nectar for them; planting honeysuckle for instance, will add that element to your garden.

Even if you don't know very much about garden design, it shouldn't keep you from getting started. Adding elements to a very simple garden can make it interesting. Easy ways to brighten up your garden and make it your own can be done with adding ornaments, a striking centerpiece or decorating the fence.
