What is Drifting?

by Dean Coldham

Have you ever wondered about Formula D or other drift series? Here is a straightforward and thorough primer on the sport or art of drifting.

Ultra-modified RWD race cars and insane powerslides - this is what drifting is all about. Drifting took a while to catch on after its inception in Japan, but now it is more than just a niche; it's a cultural phenomenon that's at the highest level of competitive motorsport. Fans come from all walks of life in areas as diverse as Saudi Arabia, Australia, Eastern Europe and the USA.

When it comes to understanding drifting, though, there are some substantial differences between it and other forms of motor racing. As a spectator, you need to understand the rules and how it is judged to comprehend how the scoring relates to what they've seen.

To wrap your head around this sport form of motor racing it is perhaps best to start with what the point is. That is, what does a Formula D judge, those who determine who is the best driver, look for in a Formula Drifting race? You'd bet they would start by looking for the defining features of a standard drift. A technical definition of drifting might be to deliberately cause what's known as a lateral slip. A lateral slip occurs when the car outperforms the adhesion limits of its tires. This causes the car to skid or "drift" in a way almost perpendicular to the direction the vehicle faces. Of course this is very difficult to do but that's a major factor behind the feverish popularity drifting enjoys worldwide.

The Kansei Drift is the archetypal style of drifting.. Unlike the other examples, it only focuses on steering instead of applying the breaks or using heavy amounts of throttle to induce oversteer. A driver can initiate a Kansei Drift by ceasing to use the accelerator. Then the driver oversteers. The Kansei Drift is a choice method for navigating high-speed corners. However, it is only to be performed with a neutrally balanced car. It is not an appropriate method to use with other vehicles. In single-car passes the driver is judged purely on style - putting a foot out of the window scores points with judges! When two cars are competing, it's done over two drift battles, with each car having a turn at leading. The judges award points based on how close the following car stays to the lead car, how well the cars follow a predetermined drifting line, and how spectacular the drift is (e.g. how much smoke).

What do you do to drift even before you get a driver's licence? Some motor racing schools offer drifting courses, but if that's above your budget you can do it online in drifting games with just a computer and internet connection.

You cannot encompass everything there's to say about drifting under one article. Of course, the most important thing is the driver. Experience is what a good drifter needs to make Formula D racing the great auto sport it is.

Top drivers take care of their health and diet. This might include multivitamins, ginkgo biloba tablets, protein (like pea protein) and energy boosters before a race, and healthy eating, detox kits and plenty of water the rest of the time.
