The Upward push of Nintendo in the Video Game Market
by Joe Jagger
The upward push of Nintendo to the apex of video game consoles is a gigantic jump from its small beginnings in Japan as an organization that made playing cards. Back in 1951 the name for Nintendo was officially the Nintendo Karuta Company, Limited, and their stream of income was generally the playing cards. The company became the first in Japan to make playing cards out of plastic.
The president of the company at this time was Hiroshi Yamauchi and after he made a trip to the United States in 1956 to see how playing cards were made in the U.S, he realized that the market for the cards was limited and he decided to follow other business decisions for Nintendo while still selling playing cards. The move away from playing cards started around 1963 when Nintendo branched out into a motel chain, a food company, a toy company, and a taxi firm.
None of the new ventures were massive successes for Nintendo except for the toy company. One of the early successes for Nintendo in the toy business was the toy called the Ultra Hand that was released in 1970. Almost all of the new toys made by Nintendo were electronic and were more technologically cutting edge than other toys at this time. Other preferred toys included Love Tester, 10 Bill Barrel, and Ultra Machine.
Nintendo made massive steps electronically with the releasing of the Nintendo Beam Gun Game that was the predecessor to the NES Zapper. This led straight to further growth of games involving video and their first real video game success which was when they were given the rights to pass out the game Magnavox Odyssey in Japan.
In the 1970's Nintendo started to develop their own video games and from here the company saw the possibilities of the Nintendo game market. In 1975 EVR Race was released for the colonnade market and was quite successful. That success was continued with other games like Donkey Kong and Radar Scope.
In 1983 Nintendo released the video game Mario Bros. Which was a big hitthat was followed by Super Mario Bros.
There was also the releasing of Nintendo's own cartridge-based video game console named Famicom. The name and design was modified in 1985 to Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). There had been also a move into making a lightweight game system called Game Boy that became the top selling portable game system ever.
Nintendo added to its success with releases of Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3 together with otherpopular games. The company moved on to be on the cutting edge of advanced technology for its video games. The release of their new console, Wii, in 2006 opened up the company for further domination in the video gaming market.
